One of the greatest classics of Hindi cinema, Sholay, is till today appreciated by both the old and the young alike. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, this 1975 film sparked off a new genre of films in Bollywood that took off from the American Wild West movies, although Sholay was unique in itself.
Starring Amitabh Bachchan as the serious but warmhearted Jai, Dharmendra as the fun-loving and frivolous Veeru, Sanjeev Kumar as the fiery Thakur Sahaab, Hema Malini as the bubbly blabbermouth Basanti, Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) as Radha, the bereaved widow of the Thakur’s younger son and Amjad Khan, the man who made Sholay what it is, as the infamous dacoit, Gabbar Singh.
With great stars and songs like Yeh Dosti, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Mehbooba and other super numbers, it was clearly apparent that Sholay would be the greatest hit of its time.
Rang De Basanti
In his film Rang De Basanti, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has sketched a similarity between the struggles of our revolutionaries against the British before independence and our tussle against a corrupt bureaucracy in modern day India. Sue (Alice Patten) visits India in a hope to make a film on revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and others and she ropes in five dispassionate college students, who are also close friends, to play these martyrs. The story of the film they are doing, becomes a reality for them when one of their friends dies in an air crash. Aamir Khan as usual delivers a performance par excellence, but the others (Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Madhavan and Soha Ali Khan) are to be equally applauded for their brilliant portrayals.
A typical masala film of the 70’s with Amitabh Bachchan, who had shot to fame in this era, in a double role, one as the cautious and diplomatic Don and the other as the conspicuous paan-chewing street performer. The intelligent and conniving international smuggler, has an air of arrogance, which does not get any lesser even as he breathes his last words “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai” (it is not only difficult but impossible to capture Don). Vijay (Don’s look-alike) who is completely his opposite, is sent to Don’s hideout to obtain valuable information from the gang. Here he meets Roma (Zeenat Aman), who has joined the gang to kill Don. Although a bit complicating, the film strikes a good note with the audience. Memorable songs like Khaike Paan Banaras Wala, Ye Mera Dil Pyaar Ka Deewana, Main Hoon Don among others, make the film all the more entertaining.
Considering this was John Matthew Matthan’s directorial debut, he has churned out a pretty well crafted script. It deals with cross-border terrorism and also the antagonism that society has towards fellow countrymen who got left behind after the partition.

Ajay’s tryst ends in him being implicated for his brother’s murder and also accused of having an illicit relationship with his sister-in-law. He escapes from jail with the help of his new found friends and sets out to avenge his brother’s murder.
Meenakshi Sheshadri plays his supportive ladylove.
