Sholay is one of all-time blasting blockbuster hindi cinema with perfect action, drama, romance, comedy, emotions and music. The characters of Sholay are still alive via ads, jokes and comedy shows. Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) runs the biggest racket of dacoit in and around the Ramgarh Village. Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), a police inspector, nabs Gabbar Singh in a trap by police. One day Gabbar Singh runs away from the jail and kills the whole family of Thakur Baldev in revenge. Gabbar also cuts off both the hands of Thakur Baldev and makes him free to live a helpless life. With the help of one of his colleague, Thakur Baldev finds out the two burglar friends Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) with whom he had met long back and was impressed with their courage and fighting skills. Thakur Baldev offers them a handsome deal to catch Gabbar Singh alive.
Jai and Veeru come to the village and starts protecting the villagers of Ramgarh while making the strategy to make a trap to Gabbar Singh. In due course Veeru falls in love with the very talkative and beautiful village girl Basanti (Hemamalini). Jai gets attracted towards Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), the widow daughter-in-law of Thakur Baldev. Jai and Veeru fights with the men of Gabbar Singh, who came to Ramgarh to collect the ransom money and food. In return Gabbar attacks at Ramgarh on the festive day of holi, but in a tough fight Jai and Veeru defeats them and Gabbar Singh runs away. In a strategic move, Jai and Veeru also manage to destroy a lot of arms and ammunition of Gabbar Singh. Frustrated Gabbar Singh brutally kills a teenage village boy Ahmad (Sachin). One day Basanti and Veeru get trapped in a planned move of Gabbar Singh and Gabbar makes them hostage. Although Jai manages to save them but in this attempt Jai loses his life. Angry Veeru makes an aggressive attack on the Gabbar along with few of the villagers. In a series of dramatic events finally police arrests Gabbar Singh. Basanti and Veeru lived happily ever after.
Sholay is full of dramatic, emotional and funny scenes. Even the small characters like Asrani as Jailer, Jagdeep as Soorma Bhopali and Leela Mishra as Mausi have left a remarkable impression by their comic acts. An outstanding direction by Ramesh Sippy under the production supervision of father G.P.Sippy has made a wonderful screenplay written by Salim-Javed in one of the most entertaining film of Hindi film industry. Pacham da’s music and Helen’s item song further adds glamour to the film.
Economists say that by imparting the inflation value Sholay is the most successful film of Indian Film Industry especially in terms of box office collection. Although this movie was declared flop in the beginning but slowly it picked up in the successive weeks and created a terrific history. Filmmakers also changed the ending of the film where in earlier version of the film, lame Thakur Baldev kills Gabbar Singh. Amjad Khan put a lot of effort to get the right look and feel of the character; it’s been told that he lived like a dacoit throughout the film without taking bath.
Despite of it being a copy of Sergio Leone’s masterpiece ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, Sholay has its own original essence in the characters, situations and plot.
