Releasing this Friday is a social drama directed by ace director Onir titled ‘I Am’. The movie is much talked even before its release for the subject it deals with. The movie is about issues and dilemmas that bruise the modern Indian society. Onir has tried to unravel and explore these issues as the story of the film unfolds with many characters who individually struggle to discover their identities. All the characters of the film try to uphold their dignity in a heartless and insensitive world.
The movie is shot in four different cities of India. It is an amalgamation of four stories where the protagonists share a common dream of regaining their lives, their identity that has been taken away from them.
Manisha Koirala plays a Kashmiri Muslim single woman, Afia, in the film who feels that her identity can be made whole once she gains motherhood. She is unable to trust a man for attaining motherhood. Feeling frustrated by the society that feels that a man is necessary for a woman to help her get motherhood, she re-defines her search.
Another lady of the film, Juhi Chawla, plays Megha who is a Kashmiri Pandit. Against the backdrop of the ethnic cleansing in Kashmir in early 90’s, this story tells of loss of home and identity. If your own home rejects you, where do you go and where are you “from”?
Next, the film deals with issue of sexual abuse and the victim of it is Abhimanyu. He has been trapped by past of sexual abuse. He wishes to move forward in his life but for hat he has to go back in his past and gain his stolen childhood.
Another male character Omar is horrifyingly sexually discriminated besides being blackmailed and prejudiced. He represents gay society and reveals how the police use Article 377 (law under Indian Penal code which criminalizes homosexuality) to harass and blackmail gay men. In the current climate of media sensationalism, perhaps this story gains even more poignancy.
Nandita Das and Purab Kohli are must watch and render lovely natural charm to the film. The audience would be surprised to see that Anurag Basu can act too. A must watch definitely!
