The script of The Dirty Picture, a biopic on southern sex siren Silk Smitha, demanded that a voluptuous Indian beauty, symbolic of the time, play the lead character of the film.
Milan Luthria, the director of the much-controversial film “The Dirty Picture” perceives that Vidya Balan has that typical Indian look, which made her the ultimate choice for the role of Silk Smitha, the hot sex-bomb from the South, who blazed the silver screen in the late 80’s with her breathtaking overtures.
“We wanted someone who was not merely a sex symbol, but also had the potentials of a great actor and Vidya fit the bill perfectly. Silk Smitha had never been thin and Vidya Balan has a similar voluptuous body structure that only one in a many Bollywood actresses could brag of today.” Held Luthria.
He also adds that the team had contemplated for a while, before a unanimous decision was reached for casting Vidya Balan to play the role of Silk Smitha.
“That someone as talented as Vidya should play such a character is enough to fire curiosity. Besides being a South Indian herself, Vidya offers an authenticity and poise that are a distinction in itself,” remarked Luthria.
We have already seen from the first trailer of the film released on YouTube, how right Milan Luthria was about his assumptions of Vidya for the role. The audience has received the trailer with great admiration. Even those who were skeptical about Vidya pulling the act together have taken back their words, for she has stunned everyone with her superb transition in this film.
The director also added that a lot of effort and persuading were put into the transformation of Vidya into the bold and sexy Silk Smitha.
“The transformation of a coy and demure lady to a sensuous diva, who looks sexy yet not vulgar, demanded a great deal of attention and hard work. Vidya has the ability to maintain a shy look even in a bold scene, which shows how highly talented an actress she is. The character she is playing is completely different from what she has ever done before, but it all comes out of her as if naturally. I am certain people are discerning this new side of her talent and also the film for that matter,” stated Luthria.
“Initially Vidya had inhibitions about certain costumes and scenes, but we had to do a lot of talking to her before she was able to let go of these fears and step out onto the sets feeling more comfortable and relaxed. She adopted her new avatar well and the audience has loved her in her act,” he said.
The film also stars Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor and is slated for release on December 2, the same day as Silk Smitha’s birthday.
What everyone is eagerly looking forward to now is Ekta Kapoor’s promised second trailer of the film, which is underway at the Balaji Production house at present.
